How to get to Santa Ponsa
Santa Ponsa is just over 30 minutes from the airport and a 20-minute drive from Palma de Mallorca. It is also very simple to take public transport to Santa Ponsa from Palma, travelling between the iconic Plaça d’Espanya in the capital and the resort town taking around 35 minutes. There are also further connections from Santa Ponsa to Peguera, Camp de Mar and Port d’Andratx.
History & Culture in Santa Ponsa
The name Santa Ponsa derives from a Roman villa called Sancta Pontia, where Jaume I in 1229 began his conquest of Mallorca. Sa Caleta, the cove where he arrived at, is now home to Santa Ponsa Marina and has been marked with a large stone to pay homage to this historical event. In addition, the annual festival of Rei en Jaume also commemorates this event.
When tourism hit Santa Ponsa in the early 1960s, the area fully embraced package holidays, meaning very little now remains of the original village.
Beaches in Santa Ponsa
Santa Ponsa beach is more than 500 metres wide and boasts a ‘Blue Flag’ status. The beach is fully equipped for visitors to make the most of enjoying a day on the beach, with sunbeds and parasols to rent, public toilets and showers. For those that want to cool off from the Mediterranean sunshine, there is also an array of water actvities available on the beach.
This beach is backed by a promenade which offers a wide selection of bars, cafes and souvenir shops. There’s also another small beach within the cove called Caló d’en Pallisser if you seek a beach that is less crowded.
Events in Santa Ponsa
The main event in Santa Ponsa is the Festes del Rei en Jaume, a celebration ito commemorate the conquest of King Jaume I in 1229. It is held at the beginning of September and the highlight of the festival is the mock battle between the ‘Moors’ and the ‘Christians’, which is generally held on Saturday.

Boat trips and Yacht Charters
With two marinas close by, boat trips are very popular in Santa Ponsa. From dolphin watching to trips to see the reserve island of Sa Dragonera, there’s certainly something to suit everyone.
The area is also home to several yacht charter companies, with both sailing and motor yachts of various sizes on offer. Be sure to check out Club Nautico Santa Ponsa and the neighbouring Port Adriano to find the boat you desire.
Whether you are a beginner diver or learning to be an instructor, the Scuba Diving Centre in Club Nautico Marina will provide an experience to suit your individual ability. There are more than 30 diving sites to explore off the coast of Mallorca, including marine reserves, caves and sunken ships.
Lovers of golfing in the Balearic Islands are spoilt for choice if staying in this area on the island as there are several golf courses in the vicinity. Golf Santa Ponsa is located within the resort, hosting the PGA European Tour six times. It is an extensive course of 6,543m and 18 holes, with the 10th hole being one of the longest in Europe with 590 meters.
Golf Santa Ponsa’s wonderful club house is perfect to sample some delicious food. At the exclusive Hotel Golf Santa Ponsa, you can relax on a terrace by the pool or spend a tranquil night in beautiful natural surroundings.
The most popular theme park in Santa Ponsa is Jungle Parc, an outdoor adventure playground aimed at both adults and children who love an adventure. It’s a high-rope course up in the trees, where adventurers climb from tree to tree along bridges, ropes, vines and lots of zip wires. There are a variety of circuits available, some are tailored for adults and others for young children.
Down the road, in the neighbouring resort of Magaluf, you will find Western Waterpark which caters for people of all ages with wave pools, outdoor rapids and slides for the adrenaline junkies. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s a baby pool with slides for the tiny tots.
Tennis enthusiasts can pop down to Santa Ponsa Tennis Club where there are both clay and grass courts available to rent. There’s also an academy if you fancy improving your tennis skills whilst holidaying on the island.
There are a whole lot of watersports you can try here. It’s easy to find family-friendly activities like pedaloes, kayaking, SUP paddle boarding around the beaches and marinas. Thrill seekers will be pleased to know jet skiing is available in Santa Ponsa and Port Adriano.

There is a small market in Santa Ponsa which is held every Saturday morning on Avenida Riu. A larger market is held just down the road in Andratx every Wednesday and is well worth a visit. There are also plenty of convenience stores found within the resort as well as souvenir and beach shops selling local goods, inflatables, towels and essential items.

There are many international restaurants in Santa Ponsa, distributed throughout the resort. A great option is Restaurante Las Olas which has incredible views of the bay and delicious seafood.
For a special occasion, 7 Fuegos is a superb choice. Located in the prestigious Club Nautico in Santa Ponsa Marina, the eatery serves Mediterranean cuisine in a sophisticated setting with spectacular views of the sea.
Bistro Steakhouse 800º Celsius is also a wonderful choice, specialising in meat plates. There are also lots of Italian restaurants in Santa Ponsa, including Parco Verde Restaurant and for those that love pizza, Pizzeria Gusto DiVino.
Nightlife in Santa Ponsa
Santa Ponsa offers a good variety of bars, some which host live music. The area’s main strip, Ramon de Montcada, is a lively place and home to many pubs and bars. If you would like to continue until the early morning, then Manhattan is popular spot for its great music and bustling atmosphere.
