The second annual Pa amb Oli World Championships is taking place at the Palza Sa Feixina during the Fira del Pa Amb Oli in Palma from 28th February to 1st March to celebrate the Day of the Balearic Islands.
The makers of this simple Mallorcan specialty is getting its game face on in February!
Two Phased Event
The Championships will have two distinct phases. Mallorca, Menorca and the Pitiüses will each hold their own separate competitions from 17th to 23rd February, with elimination rounds searching out the best of the best from each location.
The contest will then move to Palma, where during the first day of the Fira del Pa Amb Oli, the competitors will be judged by a panel of chefs and gastronomic experts and by the end of the day, the winner will be announced, giving them serious bragging rights for the next 12 months!
The rules are fairly simple. Using olive oil, bread and tomatoes as the basis, participants must offer up their creations on dishes of 20 centimetres, with the bread not allowed to exceed the size of the dish. Of course, many competitors will give their own twist to the island staple, making for interesting and delicious options.
All the finalists, including the winner, will then have their versions of pa amb oli on sale to the public at the fair. Visitors can not only enjoy these but will also find a vast selection of raw ingredients for sale, which they can take home to make their very own creations.
Participation is free to all restaurants on Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Those interested can email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information and to be a part of the fun!
