Cala Major was one of the first holiday resorts in Mallorca situated on the island’s south-western coast. Although being a mostly residential suburb, the area has retained its appeal as a splendid holiday destination.
About Cala Major
The biggest attraction of Cala Major is its beautiful sandy beach and idyllic turquoise waters. The area has grown in recent years, with a great selection of hotels, bars, restaurants and beach clubs to enjoy.
Its close proximity to Palma has meant the area has become a popular dwelling for international residents, with the Spanish royal family even choosing to spend their summers at Marivent Palace, which is situated here.
There are an array of apartments within the area which offer first class sea views, which has led to Cala Major emerging as a hot spot for property buyers on the island. In addition, the charming Cala Nova marina is also close by, retaining its authentic fishing port vibe, with a range of watersports and sailing activities on offer.
How to get to Cala Major
If you are travelling by car, it takes around 20 minutes to get to Cala Major from Palma airport and just a 10 to 15 minute drive from the city centre. Public buses also run frequently through Cala Major, stopping at some of the top tourist spots on the southwestern coastline, including Illetas, Bendinat, Portals Nous and Puerto Portals.

History, Art & Culture
Bellver Castle, a Gothic-style castle built in the 14th century for King Jaume III can easily reached from Cala Major. Located in the west of the capital, Bellver Castle offers breathtaking views of the entire bay of Palma.
Being more than 100 metres above sea level, the castle is famous for being one of the few circular castles in Europe, once serving as a residence for the Kings of Mallorca.
One of Mallorca’s most important art collections of Joan Miro is also based in Cala Major. Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro was once the prestigious artist’s home and studio, which is now open to the public, displaying a large exhibition of his infamous work.
Water Activities
Cala Nova port has a wide variety of water sports on offer, where at the Mallorca Water Sports Centre you can enjoy everything from jet skis, fly-boarding, paddle boards and so much more.
Cala Nova Port is also home to the National Sailing School which offers a wide range of training courses for both adults and children.
If the idea of cruising on the Mediterranean Sea takes your fancy, there is also the option to charter a yacht from Cala Nova port. This will provide you with sun-drenched fun on the water, with every type of boat available to rent.

Shopping
The main street of Cala Major has a good selection of stores, with everything from souvenirs to interior decor. High street brands can be found in Porto Pi Shopping Centre, which is within walking distance of the area.
For those that are seeking more choice, head to Palma city centre where there is a plethora of stores, selling absolutely everything that you could desire.

Beaches in Cala Major
In Cala Major you will find a wonderful blue flag beach that exudes an infectious Mediterranean vibe where sun loungers and parasols are available to hire.
Being one of the closest beaches to Palma, it is well recommended to arrive early in the summer months as it can become particularly busy with those that want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

One of the loveliest spots is La Parada del Mar, one of the longest-standing fish restaurants in the area and which sits opposite Marivent Palace.
Alternatively, Il Paradiso offers Italian fine dining cuisine, with spectacular sea views from its terrace. Another great choice is Zhero Beach Club, which is a trendy venue that serves great sushi and cocktails.
For those that seek more choice, Palma city centre is close by and offers a wide selection of local and international cuisine at some of the most acclaimed restaurants on the island.
